National Park of Zakinthou
The National Marine Park of Zakynthos, was founded in 1999 and includes the bay of Laganas, in the old Pantokratoras on the southern coast of Zakynthos, in the Ionian Sea. The area is part of the Natura 2000 network of protected areas. Zakynthos Marine Park is the first park of this kind in Greece and the Mediterranean to protect the sea turtle Caretta Caretta. The protected area includes the marine area and the islets of Lagana bay, the turtle spawning beaches and a coastal zone surrounding them, the wetland of Keri Lake, Marathonisi and Strofades, about fifty kilometers south of Zakynthos. The ecosystem is a turtle spawning area, and includes sand dunes, Posidonia oceanica submarine pastures and coastal ecosystems. There are hundreds of species of rare flora and fauna found there.
